The bride and groom shared the cake with their relatives and friends, thus paying tribute to their role as witnesses of the marriage.
As time passed, the customs also changed, and instead of cakes, the guests received five sugared almonds, which stood for health, prosperity, a long life, happiness and fertility. Through the symbolism of fertility and abundance, almonds have long been associated with marriage. There is also the custom to glaze a bitter almond with sugar in order to illustrate the symbol of the vow "in good times and in bad".
Today the bride and groom present their guests with small gifts to thank them for coming and as a reminder of the special day. How this gift looks like varies much more than in the past.
